“Balance”
My creation resembles the organic growth of the natural order in the world, as well as the organic growth of my woodcutting skills throughout the creation of this work. I am reflecting my own progress as a sculpture creator to the progress of the natural world perfecting its evolutionary process.
The inability to create a perfect circle, which is represented by my craftsmanship, is also a metaphor for the imperfection of the natural world, yet no matter how imperfect the natural world may seem from a physical standpoint, it still stands perfectly in balance.
My creation progress can be similar to the progress of evolution, better and better, holding onto a perfect balance, however never attaining perfection due to the its clearly unattainable nature. The circle is also imperfect, just like all of these other factors.
The negative space on the top is representative of the role of human’s in the natural world. We are connected to the rest, however standout as separate from the rest of the natural ecosystem in our behaviors and societal structure. The mess on the bottom shows the natural world’s tendency to rise from shaky beginnings and further escalate towards perfection, but perhaps never reaching it.
For future iterations of this project, I would like to place my sculpture on a pedestal that raises it up to a more comfortable waist level, bringing it closer to the viewer’s eye.
