This installation, Contact, by Japanese art collective, 目, includes lifelike sculptural waves highlighted from light behind a window. The work uses light and realistic sculpture to create an immersive and lifelike scene that captures the essence of water and purity.
I am inspired by this work, not only by its simple use of one medium, which is then made complex through extreme detailing looking nothing short of an actual wave of water, but also by its use of light and reflection to capture every groove of the wave.
This inspires my future works as light is an important part of sculpture and I plan to use mirrors and projects in this same fashion in order to combine the light and material to evoke the purity and essential facts of nature. In my imagination, true artistic beauty comes from a singular medium which is then propelled to its maximum extent.
There is a peaceful yet tumultuous emotion that exudes from this piece. This duality is what evokes the entire range of human perception. From the fragility of each individual wave to the power of the whole ocean. The largest contrasts in perception are most easily expressed by the simplest and cleanest execution.
