Reading 1: Forms of Readymade
My belief about the ideas of readymade art is that we can take the convenience of everyday objects and orient them in a way that expresses a very important meaning. This is the transformation into the world of art and it has a lot of value to be able to take such ordinary objects and add such high value to them. This requires a lot of intellect from the artist to totally erase the original sculptor’s intentions and create an entirely new entity.
Marcel Duchamp’s fountain, is the most famous example of turning a readymade object into a work of fine art. It turns a urinal into a fountain. In my mind, the decontextualization and repositioning of the urinal questions people’s perception of what counts as art. Rather than creating a specific meaning, this piece is meant to make people simply question. It is the complete dismissal of any formal analysis, and allowing people to come up with their individual interpretation.
Project 1: Blindness
Glasses are meant to help with vision.
These glasses look fun to wear, they are beautiful, and provide the world with colorful vision.
However, in this positioning, they simply provide the wearer with blindness, there is a blockage of vision.
The wearing of these glasses is also quite uncomfortable to the viewer as they cannot be un-removed from the table.
These glasses represent any kind of escape from reality, that presents itself as a vision of truth and beauty, that is equivalent to taking the blue pill. However the truth about taking the blue pill is that staying ignorant for too long causes discomfort.
As there will always be manifestations in life that will provoke you from your intellectual sleep, they become more and more bothersome the longer you decide to stay muddled in a fantasy.
These glasses can represent anything – fake love, drug abuse, nationalism, that can be an attractive way of thinking at first, but in reality will cause blindness.
